The Hills Basketball Centre, master-planned and delivered by MSK Architects, represents a major architectural extension and transformation of the existing facility at Fred Caterson Reserve, Castle Hill.
Responding to growing demand and a strong community sports culture, the development integrates two additional FIBA-regulation indoor courts with the existing three, creating a cohesive and scalable complex. The new courts are complemented by a 500-seat grandstand, a dedicated meeting room, multiple store rooms, and referees’ and players’ amenities including upgraded change rooms, accessible showers, and baby-change facilities.
The architectural approach extended the facility north-ward while preserving the original form and material palette, ensuring seamless integration between old and new. A key design feature is the reoriented main entrance, which now directly addresses a newly configured 135-spacecar park with designated motorcycle bays, bicycle parking, and a bus drop-off zone.
Sustainability and landscape design were integral to the project.
The first floor features an office suite(140m²), meeting room (61m²), store rooms, and a tea room, all arranged around the upper level of the grandstand, providing elevated views to the new courts below.
Public circulation is carefully considered, with platform-lift access, wide passageways, and multiple exits. Materials throughout are durable and low-maintenance, supporting heavy community use while delivering a crisp, contemporary interior experience.
Whether hosting grassroots training or major tournaments, the Hills Basketball Centre now serves as a resilient, flexible, and future-ready facility—an exemplar of community sports architecture, and a standout project by MSK Architects.
